铜（Cu）在自然界分布很广，其地壳丰度为0.01%。已发现的含铜矿物有280多种，主要的有20多种，按化学成分划分为：自然铜、硫化物及其类似的化合物、氧化物、卤化物、碳酸盐、硅酸盐、磷酸盐和硫酸盐等形式产出。铜是一种紫红色金属，硬度2.5~3，密度8.5~9g/cm3,熔点1083oC,沸点2567 oC。铜的延展性和导热性强，导电性高，还具有良好的化学稳定性和容易与锌、铅、镍、铝、钛等熔合成合金的性能。
