Different theories emerged in different periods. The vitality of a theory depends on whether theorists can criticize and absorb new ideas of a new age, and can inherit the essence of traditional theories, which is the way of the development of a theory. In the Northern Song Dynasty, there were three influential schools of thoughts. Among them, Buddhism was the most influential, whereas the influence of Confucianism was on the decline. Cheng Hao and Cheng Yi among the neo-Confucians inherited Confucian values, criticized and absorbed Buddhism and Daoism. In this way, they promoted the development of Chinese philosophy.Cheng Hao and Cheng Yi inherited Confucian tradition to defend Confucian orthodoxy and criticize heterodoxy. They criticized the moral standards and the view of life and death of Buddhism and Daoism. Meanwhile, they absorbed the metaphysics of Buddhism and Daoism. At last, they constructed a system of neo-Confucianism and improved the theoretical level of Confucianism. Their method is meaningful for the construction of new Chinese philosophy when they handled Buddhism and Daoism.
