元语言是用来描述或者解释语言行为的语言,在语言学、自然科学和逻辑学中应用广泛,但对英语教师的课堂元语言话语行为分类及功能的研究,还没有引起足够的重视.根据元语言的相对性特征,英语教师课堂元语言话语行为可以分为母语元语言和英语元语言.根据其功能,又可以分为讲授元语言知识的元语言话语和体现人际功能和语篇功能的元话言.英语教师的课堂元语言行为,有着与其他领域不同的性质和特征.它不仅是教师组织、管理课堂教学、描述和解释语言现象和规则的重要手段,同时还可以帮助学生有效地领悟语言的本质,培养学生的元语言意识和元语言能力,从而实现有效的课堂互动.

Metalanguage is a language that is used to describe or explain language itself.It has been widely used in linguistics,natural science and logics,but its classification and roles played in the foreign language teaching have not been given enough attention.According to the relative features of metalanguage,English language teachers' metalanguage can be divided into mother tongue metalanguage and English metalan-guage.According to its functions,it can be further divided into metalanguage which is used to teach knowledge of language and metalanguage which performs interpersonal and textual functions.English lan-guage teachers' metalanguage is quite different from the use of metalanguage in other fields.Teachers' use of metalanguage is not only the main source of language input for students in the foreign language classroom,but it also helps students to grasp linguistic knowledge,develop their metalanguage awareness and competence,and it also functions as the effective device for the realization of teaching objectives and classroom interaction.
