The significance of the electric drilling rigs powered by the grid is introduced. The source of producing harmonic and reactive power in the electric control systems of the drilling rigs are pointed out. The control scheme based on the SVG technology is put forward. The working principle of SVG is given. The key points for design and configuration are presented. The practical applications and the testing results show that SVG used in grid electric drilling rig has high performance to price ratio, remarkable economic benefit and is worth being promoted to be widely applied.
