Miller wrote The Crucible as a response to McCarthyism,which yet is not the theme of this play.In The Crucible,Miller wanted to go beyond the discovery of guilt,to a study of the results of such guilt.Due to the historical background,Miller calls for an ideal individual conscience for the whole society to reach a harmonious realm.Therefore,it is argued that Miller centers this study on the creation of characters,elevating and celebrating people of individual conscience in a tragic but noble way.The present paper focuses on the analysis of characters' creation,revealing the moral theme of the play and Miller's perspective to an ideal individual.
