This paper reviews two families of genes (homeotic genes and SOX genes) and their roles in regulating development.The development of an adult organism begins with a single fertilized egg following a predetermined cascade of control,in which specific genes are turned on and off at particular times.The principal level for controlling gene expression is at transcription and the regulators of transcription are often DNA-binding proteins that activate transcription at particular promotors or other regulatory regions.By regulating transcription,these two families of genes play essential roles in a variety of developmental processes.
