In the engineering design, builders should avoid short column as far as possible. And when not, effective me- asures should be taken to prevent the shear of short columns or shear diagonal tension failure. “Earthquake Resistant Design Code”(GB50 011-2010) :11 has clear requirement of ductility of frame column. The axial compression ratio and shear span ratio are the two major factors influencing ductility of column. This paper disc- ussed which measures to take to deal with a short column in design.
