This paper based on the predicament of the spatial pat ern of Xi’an metropolitan area, further examines the es-sence of the main function division as the coordination of va-rious spatial planning and special planning, improvement the efficiency of resource use, based on the planning system, the bearing capacity of resources, environment and urban and rural development, puts forward the governance strategy of main function zoning of Xi'an metropolitan.
