The ground subsidence has become the main geo- logical disaster in coastal city in the east of China. The exp- loitation of confined water is the main cause of China?s land subsidence. According to the principle of effective stress, the author analyzes the ground subsidence mechanism caused by extraction of confined water, and described the hazards caused by ground subsidence.
