This paper first explores the aims,tasks,and content of teaching vocabulary in the context of ELT practice in China.Then the present situation of teaching vocabulary in high school has been investigated through questionnaires and interviews,which is further analysed from the perspective of teachers and students' attitudes,methods and effects about vocabulary learning.It is found that vocabulary teaching in high school is very important,and most students hck good methods of vocabulary learning,and teachers' ways of vocabulary teaching are also limited.Finally three strategies are suggested,i.e.combining pronunciation and form,using prefixes,suffixes and roots,and using graphic organizers.
